Operators have until 15 May to complete network testing in advance of MNP.

India is likely to launch mobile number portability services--which allow users to switch providers without changing their phone number--by June 30, 2010, a government statement said Thursday.

The statement said some operators are yet to test if their networks are ready to launch mobile number portability, or MNP, services and the government has set a deadline of May 15 to complete the tests.

"Based on successful completion of the action taken (tests)..., the DoT will finally decide the dates for MNP implementation," the statement added.

The launch of MNP has already been delayed twice.

It was to be implemented by Dec. 31, 2009 in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai as well as in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The deadline was then changed to March 31 for launch across the country.

In February, the government said it was planning to launch MNP by the first week of May, with initial launches in the southern cities of Bangalore and Chennai.
